Children’s author and illustrator David McKee died this year. He gave the world Mr Benn, Elmer The Elephant and in my view the most courageous and brilliantly observed picture book story of all time ‘Not Now Bernard’. The unexpected arrival of a monster at Bernard’s front door is a gulp, the ‘do not disturb’ absorption of Bernard’s dad in his newspaper is a double gulp, the dangerously hairy presence of a monster in Bernard’s sitting room is a triple gulp and the fate of Bernard and indeed his dad…well that’s for the reader to decide.
