The 39 Steps by John Buchan
I first read The 39 Steps at the age of 15 and loved this classic adventure, the first of five novels featuring Buchan’s intrepid all-English hero Richard Hannay. Buchan, who served as an MP and as Governor General of Canada, mixed with Prime Ministers and civil servants, and this rollercoaster tale is peppered with insider knowledge.
