Jeremy Irons: The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd

This month our Book of the Month is chosen by Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons. He writes:

I should like to recommend “The Living Mountain” by Nan Shepherd published by Canongate Books. Written in the early 1940s it was not published until the 70s. Robert Macfarlane writes the wonderful forward. It is a meditation on her relationship with the Cairngorms, and on our imaginative relationship with the wild world round us.

For me it was a great check on my peripatetic and busy busy life, and a welcome reminder that only when I stop do I really start seeing and experiencing the world through which, up until reading this charming short book, I had whirled so gaily.

Jeremy irons is currently starring in Long Day’s Journey into Night by Eugene O’Neill, at the Bristol Old Vic just until 23rd April, and in 3 films just out, Batman v Superman, High-Rise and The Man who Knew Infinity.
