Volunteer
Would you like to volunteer for Give a Book? Volunteers help bring our projects to life; whether that’s leading prison reading groups, packing boxes of books at our store days, supporting us at our office or creating book resources for our projects. Give a Book wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our volunteers.
In-person volunteering
Prison Reading Groups
If you love reading and talking about books, you could co-run a prison reading group with a prison librarian or member of staff. We offer training and provide ongoing support.
Family Days
We support Family Days in prison by sending in books for each child to read with their parent and take home as a reminder of the day. Our volunteers help families choose a title and encourage them to share the story together.
August 2025 – at present we don’t have any in-person prison roles, but this may change and our website will be updated to reflect this.
Store days
We hold monthly store days in Brentford, where we pack and send boxes of books for our various projects. Coffee, snacks and sandwiches are included and book chat is a given!
Office support
If admin is your forte, we have various tasks in our office in Holland Park, including logging and highlighting project feedback and packing project resources.
Remote volunteering
We provide resources for our prison reading projects to encourage reading for pleasure.
Book Talk is a handout consisting of two book recommendations: it includes a brief description of the book and some discussion questions. Nothing too literary and nothing too long please – run titles by us first and we will send you a design template to use. Take a look at our past choices for some inspiration!
Book Stuff is a themed handout celebrating books and reading with quizzes, crosswords, poetry and book extracts and recommendations. If this interests you, please get in touch and we will send you some samples for inspiration and a design template to use.
If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch using the form below.
