This month, author and reviewer Philip Womack chooses our Book of the Month, with a choice that captured his imagination as a teenager:
One of the books that really opened my eyes to what fiction could do was Iris Murdoch’s second novel, The Flight from the Enchanter. I stumbled across it as a fourteen year old. I’d never read anything like it before: vivid, strange, and, indeed, enchanting. It seemed to throw light on an adult world of possibility. Murdoch manages to be both funny and serious – and the book led me on to many of her other novels, and a wider sense of 20th century fiction too.
Philip’s novels include The Other Book, The Liberators The Darkening Path Trilogy and The Double Axe. Thank you to Philip for another excellent Book of the Month!
