Dame Maggie Smith: The Swish of the Curtain

This month, we’re delighted to have a book choice from Dame Maggie Smith, the great actress of stage and screen and the face of so many of our favourite on-screen characters over the years.

Dame Maggie Smith recommends The Swish of the Curtain by Pamela Brown.

She told Give a Book  “I remember hanging out of bed trying to read by the light from the landing…” and once said “I wanted to act before I read this book, and afterwards there was no stopping me.”

Maggie Smith returns to the English stage in A German Life by Christopher Hampton at the Bridge Theatre, London, from 6th April – 11th May.

Thank you for this wonderful choice, Dame Maggie! The Swish of the Curtain, originally published in 1941, has recently had a well-deserved new lease of life, with a new edition published by Pushkin Press in 2018. Find out more here.
