HMP YOI Isis – Noughts and Crosses
We asked the reading group members and education department at HMP YOI Isis – where we have a 3 year reading project – what book they would like to give someone for Christmas.
There was a lot of discussion about which book would be the one they would give others: The Cartel series, A Good Day to Die and Unlawful Killings were all suggested, but Noughts and Crosses got the most votes.
“It’s a world where Black people are in charge. Still London but everything is reversed. It gives you the opposite view of the world, from the other side, and this changes your perception. It’s deep because it shows how families can create and continue prejudice. And there’s inequality by class too that’s important. I like that it’s a part of a series, that there’s other books to go onto. I liked the way that the two characters from opposing sides unite and fight prejudice because they love each other. Love wins.”
Thank you to the young men at HMP YOI Isis for recommending this book!
