Safe Ground and Fathers Inside
We are pleased to mark 5 years working with Safe Ground; a charity promoting social justice through their work in prisons and with the community. We support their project Fathers Inside, which, to quote from their website:
Fathers Inside is an intensive group-work programme for men in prison focusing on parental responsibilities and children’s education, development and wellbeing. The programme uses drama, fiction, group discussion, games and written portfolio work to enable students to develop a better understanding of their role as a father, while challenging attitudes, developing skills essential to successful resettlement, and contributing to desistance from crime.
Give a Book is pleased to be giving GAB bags of books for the family days at the end of this programme, so that the fathers have a book to share and give to their children.
Feedback
“Thank you again for the beautiful selection of books and notebooks for the children who came to HMP Buckley Hall last week.”
“The presentation was a huge success! The men shared some really moving testimony about their experience of the programme and performed a short play which they had written themselves. It told the stories of savage lions reeking havoc on their homeland until they are locked away and develop a relationship with a puma and her cub. Over time, the relationship with the cub softens them and they no longer feel the need to be the loudest, most aggressive and destructive animals in the land. Their priority is caring for the cub and seeing her grow.”
Fathers and their families spent time in the garden in the afternoon where they were presented with their certificates and gave the book bags to all the children in attendance. It really was a lovely day. A quote from one of the participants – “you know when you look back in life and you have ‘moments’, well I know this course is going to be one of them”. All have since signed up to Storybook Dads and are booked in to record their stories on the same session. Brilliant!
