Lads Need Dads-Reading Mentors

Lads Need Dads is an award winning Not-For-Profit CIC, providing long term support and intervention for boys aged 11-15 with absent fathers or limited access to a male role model, using volunteer male mentors. Lads Need Dads help increase boys emotional intelligence, confidence, self esteem, motivation and resilience through their group-work development programme, outdoor activities, practical life skills and community volunteering outreach projects. Lads Need Dads are proactive in raising awareness of the important role fathers play in the emotional and mental health and well-being of boys and examining ways to support them in their absence.

Give a Book is supporting Lads Need Dads’ pilot reading mentor project.  The project will work with and support Year 6 boys who are struggling with their reading and ensure they are at the same level as their peers when they start secondary school. The project hopes to engage the boys with reading in a fun and creative environment.

The first three titles we sent each boy on the programme along with a bespoke Give a Book bookmark, pencil and notebook to use as a reading log were:

Wonder by R J Palacio, The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo and Fire Boy by J M Joseph

Testimonials

The Reading pilot is a real hit with the boys and mentors. The boys are loving the books and our mentors are trained to engage and reflect the content with the boys.” (June 2021)
