New Book Room for HMP Wormwood Scrubs

HMP Wormwood Scrubs

We’re delighted to be working with HMP Wormwood Scrubs to help set up their first Book Room. The room will be on a wing and will complement the existing library, to encourage recreational reading for prisoners in an informal setting. The Book Room will also provide a venue for Prison Reading Groups and for Toe-by-Toe Peer Reading Mentors.

Here is the Massachusetts Correctional Institutional Law Library, Norfolk, Massachusetts, in the prison where Malcolm X was held. He was transferred to Norfolk on the request of his sister, since the library and the educational rehabilitation program are its outstanding features.

Ten guards and the warden couldn’t have torn me out of those books. Months passed without even thinking about being imprisoned … I had never been so truly free in my life.” – Malcolm X
